LITTLE ROCK, AR – Garrett Atkins of Randolph County and Natasha Hightower of Indepence County won first place in the State 4-H Turkey and Broiler Barbecue Contest held as part of The Poultry Federation’s 58th Annual Poultry Festival in Rogers, Arkansas on June 17, 2017. Atkins was presented the Champion Turkey Division Award and Hightower the Champion Broiler Division Award by Marvin Childers, The Poultry Federation President.
Katlyn Hicks of Grant County received the Reserve Champion Broiler Division Award and Morgan Sanders of Randolph County received the Reserve Champion Turkey Division Award.
Broiler division contestants included: Jayden Neimeyer of Columbia County; Aquonette Tyous of Miller County; Madelyn Beasley of Crawford County; Ashley Mayo of Benton County; Rylee Hogrefe of Johnson County; Gwyneth Goff of Cross County; Katlyn Hicks of Grant County; and Natasha Hightower of Independence County.
Turkey division contestants included: Maria Eatmon of Pike County; Jeffrey Herndon of Hot Springs; Annie Beasley of Crawford County; Connor Francis of Sebastian County; Garrett Atkins of Randolph County; Morgan Sanders of Randolph County; Juliann Hale of Grant County; and Noah-Luke Smith of Faulkner County.
The State Champion Broiler and State Champion Turkey award winners will compete at the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in Lousiville, KY, in November 2017. Other 4-H contestants at the conference will compete in poultry judging, egg preparation and the Avian Bowl.
The poultry judging contest teach participants to make decisions in an orderly manner, use reasoning skills and communicate decisions. Students also learn to use USDA grading criteria to determine quality of ready-to-cook poultry and eggs.
The Poultry Federation is a trade association representing the poultry and egg industry in Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas.
